i bought a 99 5.o short block out of a explorer to replace my 5.0 out of my 93 f-150 i know my heads and intake will work i also know the explorer comes with gt40p heads and intake (which were sold off of the motor) why is the gt40p heads better is it that they flow more air if so could i get my heads reworked to match the gt40s what would be the best uprades for the motor without tearing the block all the way down and how is the cam in the explorer motor i plan on longtube headers and flowmasters for my exhaust thanks for the help
Yes.. the E7 heads would flow as well as the GT40's if professionally ported and bigger valves were installed, but you could probably buy heads even better than the GT40 for what that would cost.
Your parts choices depend upon the intended use and how the truck will be equipped. Is it going to be carbed or EFI? Street or offroad? Manual or auto tranny? Big tires or stock?
OK first thing you need is a gearing change, go right to 4.10 or 4.56 to restore stock final drive ratios with the big tires plus a little, and also because when you hop up the motor the powerband will be from 2500rpm and up. Along with longtubes get the cam in my sig line and put a shift kit in the tranny. Do not put off the gearing change or your tranny will not last long, the AOD needs all the help it can get.
use 4.56 gears with 33in tires that's what i am putting in now and if you can set up a 9in. rear don't beleive you can set up your 8.8 i made that mistake and just trailered my truck (looked funny on a trailer with a unlifted truck towing it) to my mechanic friend's shop and we're going to set up the rear before his shop opens tomorrow morning
but 4.56 gears with 33s is the same as 3.73s and stock tires
