Radio help!

I want to put an fm radio in my 71' f-100 ranger xlt. I would like to get an original or a reproduction that would fit in the stock mounts and bezel. I am tired of whistling to myself. some reproduction radios are costing $200 and up, don't want to spend that much. Any solutions?

That's the hard part, as they don't make radios with ***** anymore.

Have to do some digging and find someone with an older radio to buy and install. I have a cheap-cheesy am/fm I bought 15 yrs ago for car, don't use it anymore. Be glad to donate it if you were near me.

vintage car radio has some the range from $149 to $250 but they have **** plus they are made for a cd changer and remote (Radios - Vintage Car Radio .com) if you Google vintage am/fm car radio you can get some other brands. but you are going to pay at lest $150 for a good vintage radio with all today's features. but if you just want a am/fm cassette player got to radio shack or or your closest stereo shop they usually have the old school stuff for cheap. hope this helps you out!!

There are two other options too. There is a company (maybe more than one) that will take your stock am or am/fm radio and remove the guts and put in new stuff. Search this forum, someone just posted a link a week or so back.

The other option is a company that makes new systems that look like old stock. This may be vintage car radio that frankenstein posted above. I saw them on the Hemmings Motor Week tv show. They were at a car show and there was a display of brand new, really nice looking, high power stereo systems. You can also get a high power 6x9 dual speaker that will fit right into the dash where the original sits. These things are supposed to fit like the stock items do.

If I was gonna do it, I think I'd have my original re-done to new.

Did you mean "Wow!" Because if not, I'm not sure what you're asking by "How!"

I know they weren't cheap but $200 did seem like the ballpark.

Do you have the original AM radio?

Hemmings Motor News (hemmings.com) / Section: Services Offered.

There are companies listed in this section that will take an original AM radio, add F/M, and/or a cassette, and/or a CD to it.

Depending on the size of the radio, they may be able to install at least two of these features, or possibly all three.

Adding these features does not increase the radio's size, so it will fit back into the dash as original.

Ford did offer an AM/FM radio for the 1971/72 F100/350's, but they are rarer than hens teeth.

Be WARY if you see one of the 1971/72 F100/350 AM/FM radios for sale...especially on ebay.

ebay sellers are klewless (and some lie worse than used car dealers). They will claim this is an original AM/FM for a 1971/72, but it prolly ain't!

The AM/FM radios have a specific ID code stamped on the chassis with a prefix that begins with D1TA or D2TA.

Any other prefixes (like D3TA, D6TA, D6DA for example).....are NOT correct, and will not fit!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ford also offered a hang on (under the dash) 8 track stereo tape player.

The same one used in 1968/72 F100/350's was also used in the 1968/72 passenger cars.

These are rare, but do show up on ebay now and then.

When the 8 track stereo tape player was installed, the doors have round stereo speakers installed behind rectangular grilles.

The speakers and grilles are the exact same parts 1968/70 Mustangs & Cougars used.

I had this same dilemna, I broke down and got online and bought a dash kit for an '83 volvo, a pioneer cd player, and a couple of 6x9's. To put the radio in, I just gently bent the tabs for the ***** back into the dash (no cutting) I can take a picture of it installed and put the picture in my gallery so you can see how it looks if you want. For the sterio, speakers, and dash kit I got it all for $170 from a place called sonic electrolux.

Thank you, this is a big help. I do not want to put a radio in there that results in cutting or bending anything. I do have the original radio. Another problem is speakers, there is only one stock palce to put one, in the dash, and of course it isn't there. I will look into getting my radio converted to fm and I am thinking of mounting 2 speakers under the dash, yes or no? thanks a lot.
