I am getting ready to pull the trigger on a new complete bed for my late 1950 f-1 restoration project. Does anyone have any comment, horror stories or words of wisdom regarding buying source, assembly, painting or installation. I am considering Mar-K among others. Response through forum appreciated as well as any "off the air" comments regarding vendors via email carldeverter@msn.com

get it primed if you can.. amazing how fast the rust starts to appear.
certainly primed between the layers welded together (around the stake pockets, tailgate pieces).. it WILL get wet..
think about the fit.. on the 53-56, the front panel top rail ears do NOT go completely to the bed rail,, there is an opening.. some supply a front panel with a closed edge. (MF catalog shows this).
I didn't want to use chains.. so had the chain ears left off.. required some clean up welding.
make sure when you paint to get inside the front lip on the bed front cover, or prime it before assembly. (repeat, it will get wet).
mine was $1300 delivered, Michigan to Texas. complete.
Along this same line... I have my original bed that was used for years to haul fire wood. With that, it has a ton on small dents in the sheet metal from having logs thrown in from a distance. The metal is all good - no rust, just a ton of dents.
Thoughts - can I straighten it out, or is it time to buy a new bed?

if you want straight, even close .. then its new bed..
it MIGHT be possible to get it to 80-85% with lots of work.

Go back into your user CP and add where you are located so it will come up in your thread. It helps alot when trying to answer questions about vendors/shipping, etc. I have only heard good things about Mar-K and will probably use them when I get to the point of needing a bed. It is my understanding they will customize the bed for you if you so desire; i.e., taller bed sides, wider, etc.
I bought a new bed from Mar K back in 04, the quality and fit was very good. More recently, I decided to repair the original bed on my 52 F1..... never again. New front panel, rear x-member, and 100 hrs of body work later I have a pretty nice bed. Still not as nice as a new one, and cost twice as much. Go for the new one. T/M
Got mine from ProsPick. It's more expensive than some of the others but it comes primed and includes the bed wood, stainless strips, mounting hardware, and all bed supports. Installation instructions were good also.

yes, they are the cadillac end of the choices.. always great.. wish SO much I had purchased back 8 yrs ago when I saw their ads..
my kit came with everything as well.. I have updated to the no bolt stainless strips beyond the kit.
I'm surprised they didn't put a "buy it now" price on this auction because if you can get it for less than a thousand + the other usual costs that not a bad price. It should be pretty hard to screw up a reproduction bed...I would think anyway.

I talked to them a year or so ago, about scheduling meeting at some show to pickup without shipping charges.. and they only cover the southeast for shows.
Thanks for all the help. The pro pick instructions on line were really a big help along with mar-k's also. The paint tips and all the comments have been a great help. Shipping is the big deal and since I live about as far as one can get from Pro pick without being in the Pacific Ocean and with their top quality price, they are out of the question for me.
For those interested, Mar-k is offering free freight and while I will need to epoxy prime, I have always considered that a given, so I think I will take advantage of their shipping offer and from what I hear, get a pretty decent product.
FWIW; I have talked to the folks that have the 995.00 bed on ebay and their rolled side edge is larger than stock and with shipping, that bed runs about the same as Mar-k's plus it does not have open stake pockets. If I buy from sac vintage ford or bob drake they build shipping into their bed prices from their suppier even if I pick it up. Thanks to all fte's.
