I'm thinking of either buying the wheel well replacement panel or footing the bill on a complete side panel. The wheel well top is shot and the panel below the tail light is starting to rust. The front panel has a crease in it also. The shop selling the complete side panel says it's really not that hard as the complete side panel wraps around at the top and front and rear. It's a matter of welding them in all welds are out of site as well. Anyone done this on a 1984 F150. Of coarse while the box is off the truck I will replace the cab corners.
Not a too bad of job to do. Check underneath (inside the wheel wells) carefully for the rusted out support panels and braces. It is very important to keep the bed level at all times to insure proper fit of panels.
Consider using a panel cement along with the welding to keep the seams tight and closed.
I would evalute the amount of time involved...the current rusted panels and the availibility of an entire replacement box. In the long run finding a box that is in better shape (less rust...damage) is easier to restore in the long run.
Thanks Bob for your response. I thought of looking for a complete box But everyone I seem to find is in the same shape or soon to be. Buying two complete sides is costing about $300.00 US Landed here. I planned on using the panel adhesive. I've Seen a body shop put on complete side with the adhesive. Can tack weld where not showing. I suppose newer years Boxes will fit, any idea to what year box will fit on the 84 frame. I think the cab corners should be straight forward with the box off.:-)
I am pretty sure almost any box the same length off a Ford will fit. I have seen allot of mixed years on trucks. Just drag a tape measure with you and check the mounting spacing....I would bet they are almost all identical.
