andrew, I am not sure where you got the instructions to pull the codes, but if not from this link then check this link out. It is from the tech section of this forum...It is what I used and it also lists the codes and I've found it to work great!
Thought i would mention it...hope this helps.

Just thought I check...
perhaps check the connection(your grounding of the self-test input).
I'm not sure why else you would not be able to pull codes.
I'm able to pull codes it's just not giving me a code for the check engine light. Just a 111 system by pass, and i know it's has a code because everytime i go down the road like over 1,500 rpm light jumps on. But when i try to pull it, it only shows 111.
strange.....I thought i was in the clear...but the light came back on this morning. It did rain all night though....not sure what to think.
Sure makes it hard to diagnose though when there are no codes as in your situation.
Very strange thats what mines do. Soon as i turn it off, the codes goes away, but soon as I start down the road, it appears again. I can turn mines off right when it comes on. Crank it back up its gone until i go down the road again. This is so strange to me.
Mine will also come on if I increase the revs for about 10 seconds...
But yes....I think its just a time thing....It takes 30 seconds or so to trip the light.....mine does the same thing.
I have been poking around looking for info....here's a page related to egr's and no code..thought i would share.... Handling No Trouble Code Problems
I am just going to do some more googleing and see what I can find.
Just got done with my truck. I scan again and finally got a proper code it was code 332. I changed the sensor in the egr. And guess what the code is history for now. I rode arund for like 30min without a code.

Hey Buddy...That's awesome news.
I did some cleaning and today I was down to just the 332 code as well.
So your CEL is no longer coming on? Which sensor did you change???
the white unit attached to the egr? ..or the egr solenoid.
Let me know..
edit....I just looked up egr parts and guessing that you changed the egr valve position sensor. I also noticed online that the sensor in my parts truck is the same, so I will try it tomorrow and see what happens ....

You realize now, don't you, that once you get your code cleared for good, that we'll have to call the engine shampoo police on you. They'll come to your home and take all of your engine degreaser, and water hoses from you.

Man o man buddy...I tell ya.
I use to clean engines with pressure washers at a dealership where my ex-brother-in-law ran the wash bays. Never had a problem. It was however engine shampoo...and I used a solvent based degreaser this time(related?). It came out of the can in a stream, so I held it way back and my hose nozzel broke over the winter from water freezing in it, so I used a garden wand, which shoots a gentle shower....not a pressurized blast, and I was careful. I don't see how I could have buggered anything up.
Maybe it was just bad luck or totally unrelated,
What I don't get is how come I had that code before with no light. Perhaps since it was stored code...I don't know.
I am gonna try and switch sensor with the the one on my 93
tomorrow and see what that does. Wish me luck.
Of course today I was checking vacuum lines and broke a couple of brittle ones,so I took some from my 93 but was in a hurry, so didn't bother to label what went where. I'm sure i'll find some diagrams somewhere, but I like to label lines and hoses to save myself agravation down the road.
Anyway, you know, that I'll be cleaning my engine with a toothbrush from now on.

Good Luck! These things can be such a pain in the behind.

Great ideas! How about this instead? Once it's running right, well put a temporary seal on the bottom, and fill up your engine compartment with liquid hard rubber. Then, once it has cooled, and set, no more vacuum leaks, and no need to clean!
