I was on my way to work today (4X4 snowy Wisconsin) and all of a sudden "BAM" the windshield cracked from one end to the other, no others vehicles around.
I called a glass company and they asked me if the windshield is heated???? I looked through the owners manual and I can't find anything that would indicate it is heated. There is a black type film on the upper part of the window that is solid and then turn into pokadots.
Any ideas on how to tell if it's a heated windshield???
2004 Limited 4X4. The cost to replace it is $240.00 done in the parking lot at work.

Nope, its not heated... and the windshield shop should know that. I had the windshield replaced in my Ex a couple of weeks ago at my hotel by SafeLite, and it was less than $180.
Coming from a glass guy, NO they are not heated, just like the others have stated. The black band and then the black dots help hide the glue used from sight, and from uv light (the uv breaks down the bond).
The only heated ones I've seen where in some of the upscale minivans, and the caddillacs. WOW, talk about cool, but pricey! And I'm sure many others I haven't seen.
The heated windshields never worked out because the way they were made had a tendency to blur the vision thru them. Plus they looked funky from the outside. I'll bet they are very expensive.
Hmm, heated windshield. How much do they want to do it if it's heated? If it's not much, I'd get that, wire power to it, and install a switch. I must admit those windshield prices are quite nice. The windshield in my SVX cost $1600.
I've seen some cars where the area where the windshield wipers is heated (so the don't freeze to the glass) but I've never seen a car where the viewing portion of the glass was heated. neat.
In the mid-70's, Ford offered heated windshields in the T-Bird and the Lincoln "Mark" series. From the outside, the glass had a gold tint. Those vehicles also used a seperate 110V alternator to heat the glass. I don't remember much more about them as I never actually had to repair one. I was a line tech in a Ford dealer at the time.
We have an 01 Grand Caravan ES with a heated area on the bottom of the windshield (grid/strips running the length of the windshield about 3-4" up from bottom) to keep the wipers from freezing.
-25 F here this morning and -40 just outside the city - so forget the heated windshields - the heated seats are the world's best invention :-)
Yikes! Just got back from lunch and the readout on the Ex said it is 79 degrees outside here in Cocoa FL.
How do you guys handle that much cold...for so long....Geeeezzzzzzz.

I got back from Wellington (W.Palm) last week and it was 75-80 and sunny EVERY single day for the 3 weeks I was there. Drove back up to NY and had 14 inches of snow on the ground within 12 hours of me getting home
