Hey guys...been a while since i been out here...but only because your help in the past has kept me running good!
I have a 99 F350 2 wheel drive and am having alot of play in the steering. Was told need to replace the steering gear box. Question i have is a friend of mine has an extra one he took off from his 05 F250.....will this one work and fit mine or did they change the gear box from 99?
ok.....another question here before i mess the whole gearbox up. I have read that adjusting the gearbox can fix the play in steering, but then it is more difficult to change it back if that does not work and makes it worse. Any thoughts?
I bought a gearbox from a junkyard for $50...so i do have that if needed, but not sure procedure to replace.
Replacing it is easy, just time consuming. I've done it twice. You just remove the air box and intake pipe. Unbolt the steering shaft from the gear box. Unbolt the pitman arm from the steering linkage, and unhook the lines from the top of the gear box. Make sure that you hold the ends up so that all the fluid doesn't drain out of the power steering pump. Now have some one help you by holding the gear box and remove the 3 bolts holding it to the frame rail. When you get the new on make sure that you torque the pitman arm to 200 ft/lbs. Then replacing is just as easy.
