It's a pretty simple job to r and r radiator. No special tools needed. Unbolt the mounts on top (10mm I beleave). Pull upper hose lover hose and degas hose. Then lift strait up. You can take the shrouds off atfter you get it out. That's about it. If I missed anything someone will chime in.
Yeah I forgot about the trans lines. I just unscrewed them with a cresent. Cheeseit how dose that tool work. You mean to tell me I didn't have to unscrew those lines.
if you have an 06my and you tried to unscrew the big nuts that the lines connect to thats the transcooler. the lines pop out with that tool. hope it goes back together correctly. the early build has flare lines with nuts on them so they would unscrew.
Yeah mine is a 06. As far as I could tell they went together fine. A little tough to get lined up but I got it. Just courious but what do you mean by correctly? If they screw in it should be ok right? What kind of problems do you get if they don't?
a broken trans cooler. Ill have to look at my truck and see what type I have. by chance did you have 2 white color covers over the lines? that would be the style that uses the tool.
Yes it dose have the covers. I guess it is in good because I keep a close eye on trans temp and it dosent get hot. I haven't noticed any trans fluid in the coolant. That is what would happen if the cooler was cracked right?
Ok I think I'm in the clear here. I will be ordering the tool now for sure. For future reference how do you fix the cooler? New radiator? Or just take it to a radiator repair shop to take the old one out and put new one in?
Just wanted to add that I repaired this myself with Plastic WELD (not epoxy) from O'reilly.
Nothing else worked but the Plastic Weld has worked awesome. I actually built it up around the connection and I'm sure its stronger than original.
I took a small drill bit and stuck it into the nipple and into the whole in the radiator to make sure they were lined up. Then I gooped the whole thing up with plastic weld, waited a few minutes. Better than new.
I repeat superglue and any sort of epoxy was useless.
I did the whole repair myself with the radiator in the truck! I was fortunate to have all of the parts on hand. 7/16 drill bit, stainless hose barb, 1/4 - 18 NPT tap. Took less than 5 minutes, no leaks so far. I will post a snapshot later today.
