I just noticed something with my '06 Expedition, 5.4L. When I am in Park or Neutral, I cannot get the engine to rev over 2,500 RPM. I can stand on the throttle and it will run up to 2,500 then back off to around 1,500 then run back to 2,500, repeat over and over. I have had it for a few months and never noticed this before, but that could be because I don't rev it in neutral. Do these motors have rev limiters on them?
I tested it in 1st gear and slowly took it up to 3,500 without it kicking out, and it seems to be driving OK. It doesn't matter if I take it up slowly at idle ro stomp on it it does the same thing. Anyone ever heard of this? It doesn't seem right to me. Engine has 42k miles.
Any help would be appreciated, I think I am going to take it to the dealer tomorrow. Thanks
Thanks for the reply. That is exactly what it acts like, but I kind of thought that 2,500 was a little low. I talked to the guy at the dealer and he didn't act like it was normal. If it is a safety thing I don't want them to look at it, is 2,500 normal.
As cbradford stated,it's a type of a neutral rev limiter. It's actually the PCM limiting the amount of engine torque available with no load. What you're seeing is normal-there's nothing wrong with the vehicle.
