Help w/ 6.0s

Greetings all !!

I recently picked up the following:

2003 F550 Flatbed 6.0L 2WD Single Cab A/T 100K miles - $8,000 auction
and
2004 F350 Long Bed 6.0L 4WD ExCab A/T 160K miles - $10,000 auction

I am pretty excited. But I have a couple problems, wondered if you guys can help.

F550 - Starts well, idles a little rough - drives well, but when you stop it idles really rough, dies sometimes.

F350 - Started fine auction day, but when we came back to pick it up it took about 10 minutes to start. Same when it is cold, takes about 10 minutes to get going, but once it does it is fine.

Both were serviced, oil changes, w/ 30% lucas and Delo oil.
Haven't done fuel filters yet, that is my next task. Someone mentioned something about a fuel rail problem for rough idling. Any ideas? Help!

Thanks

Welcome to the forum, I have moved your post to the 6.0 forum, because I think you will get better results here.

First - welcome to FTE. Lots of help here for anything you might need on your trucks.

Lucas is too thick to add to the oil. The injectors are fired by the high pressure oil pump. Too thick or too much oil and your injectors have problems. Change the oil and put 5W-40 synthetic in it. Use Rotella T or Mobil 1 or Delvac 1. Also change the fuel filters (every 10k -15k)

I just got my 6.0 myself so I don't quite know all the ins and outs of them yet, but for the 550 with the rough idle I would look at the fuel filters like bismic said, and also the IAC (idle air control) valve. It might be called something else by ford though, but its function is meter the amount of air entering the throttle body at idle. I have seen on other engines where they get belt dust on them and cause the engine to idle rough and sometimes stall at idle. sorry can't help you much on the 350 without looking at it though, too many things come to mind without being able to remove a few variables. Hope the info helps though.

Drain the HFCM. Change all fuel filters. I would suggest fueling up and using an additive such as Diesel Kleen or Stanadyne. I use DK white bottle in winter, grey bottle in spring / summer. Good stuff and helps clean injectors. As bismic said, drain your oil and I would recommend going full synthetic 5W-40 also.

Just like Bismic said above, get thinner oil, change filters for sure, and see if anything happens.
The 6.0 has no idle air control valve, the earlier throttle valves don't even have function, that's why they removed them in the later models - well I think they did function, but it was related to idle EGR control.
This is where it get's interesting, cold rough idle would be related to the "heat flash" for the injectors, but if your idle rough at operating temperature, it could be EGR valve problem. If your idle not rough, but more like jumpy - uneven - that would lead to ICP ( Injector Control Pressure) sensor, what's known a problem on the 03-04 trucks, because of the high heat. ( it's located right under the turbo )

On the 350, my very first guess would be glow plugs - if oil and filter change doesn't help.
