A lot of the engine builder contests have been going with a 400M.
Yep with filled hard block to keep it stable for dyno pulls. Not a streetable engine in any sense of the word and about 25K to duplicate.

Get the best engine you can afford then go from there. People have put everything under the sun in the 60's series trucks. If your pockets are not lined with cash just go stock and enjoy driving it. Not everyone can afford a full resto. You can get engines from the scrap yard cheap enough and drive them like you stole them until they blow up. Then go get another one.

I'm not knocking the small block. I had one in my 61 for quite a while. I learned that they have to work hard all the time just to move these beasties. Your 400 has the same bellhousing pattern as a 460 and every time I go to a wrecking yard, U-pull or private, I see 460s. So if your on a budget buying a motor will be cheaper then motor and tranny.
