After a reasonably long road run tonight I stopped for supper with my wife and came back to a truck that wouldn't turn over ... apparently not enough juice left in the battery. Looks to me like an alternator, but I could be wrong. My question is, will the alternator from an 85 5.0l V8 fit on my 84 4.9L I6? I need to know ASAP! Thanks in advance for any help ... this board has always rocked.
Quick answer, I'd bet not. There's so many variations of where it mounts and where the brackets are, I'd bet it won't work. Output wise (amp output) it would be OK, its bolting it in that may be a problem.
Best bet - Autozone, runs about $79 with a lifetime warranty. I'm on my 3rd alternator.
Well, new is probably where I'm going, but I want to exercise all of my cost-free or low-cost methods first. Some days I think the truck needs to go up in flames or off a cliff or something fun.

It will likley fit the brackets, but, the 84's run an external voltage regulator, while some of the late 85's run an internal regulator alt. If it's an external regulator alt, it's a direct bolt in, if it's an internal reg alt you'll need to do some re-wiring to make it work.

I may be in luck then ... when I went to start the 85 when I bought it, I had to install the solenoid and voltage regulator from the 84 first! Could be my lucky day.
