Hey guys, this question will probably show how much of a n00b I am still with the IDI's but I need to ask anyways.
I have been looking for a 5 speed for a looong time to replace the T19 I have in my truck. I found a wrecked 2001 F250 w/7.3/5spd. I know that the 01' is a powerstroke but just asking if the tranny and or bellhousing will bolt up to what I have.
Are you sure its a 5 speed in the 01, thought it would be a 6 speed. A 7.3 powerstroke ZF5 speed will bolt up to a IDI and your transfer case will bolt to the ZF5 but if its a ZF6 it will bolt to your engine but your transfer case will not bolt to the ZF6 and then you have a problem with hooking up a speedometer if you use the transfer case that comes behind the ZF6 because the VSS is in the rear axle and is electronic
I'll have to give the guy a call and see if it's a ZF5 or ZF6. In your opinion what would be the better tranny to have? I haven't had a working speedometer in this truck since I've had it (drive by tach) so that doesn't matter to me much.
So are they bellhousings the same pattern for the IDI and Powerstroke?? That really opens a lot of possibilities that I didn't know of.
So I called the guy that has the truck. He says he bought it wrecked for the utility bed that was on it. He believes it is either a 00' or 01'. He also said he's pretty sure it's a 5spd with xfercase.
Any ideas on what I should offer him for the tranny/xfercase? I asked him what's he's looking to get out of it and he asked me what I'd be interested in paying. I have no idea what it's worth (that's what I told him).
What would you guys pay for a used powerstroke tranny/xfercase with unknown mileage/use?
It is a confirmed 5spd out of a 7.3 powerstroke. Would I want to keep the xfercase that I have currently and just get the tranny from the powerstroke then?
Depends on how many miles is on it my guess is somewhere in the 500 range but I may be way off.
You will also need a differant clutch and I'm pretty sure driveshaft.
CheeperJeeper has done the change and has a list of the parts needed simplifies things greatly.
Sounds good, cool thing is I should be able to get the trannsmission with the clutch and flywheel and slave cylinder as its still complete in the superduty.

The ZF6 speed is great if you do a lot of towing but if your just looking for overdrive the ZF5 is perfect. The ZF5 will be easier to install it's pretty much a bolt in other than the clutch disc is different, you can use your transfer case and drive shafts. You CANNOT use the flywheel off the powerstroke on your engine, it is balanced different
I mainly use this truck for towing around my trailer/wheeler, I don't like to drive it as a DD because of the limited speed it has on the hwy. I am revving it close to 3k just to do 65-70. I think the zf5 would help that out substantially.
I spent some money on the truck this summer and put on a new body and the ATS Aurora turbo system....I really love the truck for how it pulls just wish it had another gear....and I think that zf5 is the ticket.
And... I just got off the phone with the guy and he wants $1500 for the tranny and clutch....didn't expect it to be nearly that expensive. Is that reasonable?
No that price is to high, if it was a 6 speed maybe $1200, you can find ZF5s for half that price. And you are right about having overdrive, its like the difference between night and day. You won't be able to use that clutch either.
if it came out of a 01 it is a 6 spd unless it is a gas burner. The gas burner one will not fit. A lot of people think that the 6 spds are 5 spds b/c they say L, then 1-5, instead of 1-6, High gear is labeled on some as 5, then first gear is labeled as L. If it is a 5 spd it either is a Pre 98 Truck or a gas burner.
Some places are getting more since the fuel prices went through the roof, and they never came back down when fuel prices started going down.
I second the six speed behind the diesel after 98.
And no gasser tranny will bolt up, the bell housing and tranny housing are one piece on everything except the T 19.
