transmission question...

Hi.. anyone know how much fluid it takes (quarts) to do a filter/fluid change? also, how do i drain the torque conv.? is there a plug..?1992 f150 4x4 351w w/ e40d trans. when i fisrt take off (cold or hot), i have to manually startout in 2nd. gear, wind her out, then shift to drive. passing on the interstate, i have to manually shift to 2nd. or the engine revs without gaining speed. i hope its just the fluid and filter. i just got this truck, and from what i can see, the filter hasnt been done in awhile.
thanks for any input..

remove the rubber plug below convertor and rotate the convertor by tapping the key on and off, with coil wire off, until drain lines up.

use a big pan.

i am not near a manual but over 2 gallons.

someone will chime in with the right amount.

read codes.

sounds like more then just trans. fluid.

Autos don't seem to last as long a the manual. 181k miles isn't too much unless it was driven hard.

When I did my transmission service last summer I think it took 15 quarts. Go to POWERSTROKEHELP.COM - The Information Source for Ford Power Stroke Diesel Owners, it explains the whole process for an E4OD.

puzzled here.. changed fluid ( 16 qts. mercon v) and new filter. still the same. trans. doesnt slip, just having trouble shifting. has to get upto 35 mph. before it changes. ( overdrive works ) ..?? anyone know the location of the shift solenoid..? that'll be my next subject

still sounds like rebuild time.

in another post you said lots of metal in pan and on magnet.

that is a bad sign.
