So i'm thinking of creating a custom air intake rather than paying a bunch for a product name. I plan on buying a stage two air filter and using some tin to make a housing.....Does anyone have any words of advice and is there someone who has done this or an existing post somewhere(what it looks like, how it works, etc)?
What the other guys said is right on the money. If you want more air cut the holes for the Zoodad mod.
So you're saying it wouldnt be beneficial to build a air intake box that seals against the hood? Even if I used a stock air filter? Also i'm not very mechanically inclined (computers are my thing ) what is the difference between a stage I and II air filter? I just cant believe so many people buy upgraded air intake systems if you are suggesting they dont do anything? Thanks for any information...

There have been tests done on a/m intakes for the 6.0 and they do not flow more air then the stock filter until you get about 3700 on the tach. Peak torque is at 2000 rpm and peak horsepower is at 3300 on the tach, your long outta range for the extra air flow. It won't be until you push your rpm range higher(thru injectors and/or turbos) to get benefit from those filters. Right now my peak hp range is 3900, so I do benefit from the extra air, unless you plan on doing the mods that I have as a minimum, you do not need an aftermarket filter.
As to why they buy aftermarket filters. I can think of a few reasons.
1. They believe the hype surrounding the filters
2. They are going off what they experianced on past trucks and applying it to the 6.0(which can be dangerous on many levels)
3. Filters are out there and people are buying them, so they must be good for something
Speaking as someone that has a lot of blood, sweat, and tears wrapped up into his truck: stick to the stock filter setup, especially since you already admitted not being mechanically inclined(neither am I really).
(and not getting tired of doing so multiple times).
It's no problem. When I first got here, there were alot of guys that kept pounding stuff at me, some I had to learn the hard way(as some do) but they turned out to be right. Just trying to let other people know so they won't repeat my mistakes.

Thanks i appreciate it! Lesson: I dont need more air flow until i have a higher fuel delivery or upgraded turbo
There are some other things you could spend some money on other than air intakes. The 6.0 already has a lot of power. Aftermarket intake kits are pricey for the marginal power gains that are achieved. Maybe you should consider coolant bypass filter kit or a guage package to start off. These items aren't glamorous like an "AFE stage 2" intake, but they will help to protect your investment.
Just my two cents.... good luck

I would be building a custom cold air intake though....spending under $100
If your mind is already made up then do it. This is an information site not a debating forum for something that you are going to do anyway. You came here looking for advice and got some very good advice from people with a lot of experience, both good and bad, on their own trucks. And it was free.
