Please someone help!! My 01 psd f250 is starting hard. In the morning, it recently would be VERY hard to start. I cycled the ingnition twice after the "wait to start" light went out. The motor would turn over without even trying to start. Every now and then it would try to start, but then not start. I got desperate and sprayed starting fluid into the air channel and it starts right up. Today it was 51 degrees and it still wouldn't start. Out came the either can and it lit right up. The batteries are new so they aren't the problem. It turns over fast enough. If i plug the block heater in over night, it starts no problem, but i'm very concerned when it's in the 50's and it won't start. My electric bill skyrockets when i use the heater, so i don't want to use it unless it's below 30 or so. If anyone has an idea, PLEASE let me know! Thanks, Jeff
Would be willing to bet you have more than one bad glow plug. I had the same problem
when I was even more green on diesels than I am now. I installed all new AC plugs.
Started hard at probably 47. Found about half of the new plugs were bad, replaced them all again with Motorcraft/Bosch and had no more problems. By the way, you will do your engine and starter a favor by plugging it in in cold weather. I put mine on a timer so it
kicks on about 3 hrs. before I'm going to start it in the morn.
Sounds like your glow plug relay has failed.
Common problem.
It is the shorter of the two relays that are mounted just right of center on top of your engine.
The large left post should light up your test light immediatly after you turn on the ignition and stay on for a minute or so with a two minute max on-time.
If that doesn't happen, it has failed, even if you can hear it click. The contacts get burned away inside and there is no recourse but to replace it.
thanks for the reply guys. I'll check the relay tommorrow. Another question, my wife bought me a timer today that rated for 10 amps. Is this enough for the block heater?
