I am about half way through installing my EZ Wiring harness in my '50 F-1. Would the original dimmer switch be 6 volt and if so, where can I get a 12 volt switch that fastens to the floorboard the same way?
Also, I have a 6 volt horn and would like to know how I can wire it to my 12 volt system.
The 6 volt dimmer switch will work fine, it built to handle twice the current on the 6 volt system that you will have on the 12 volt system. The entire stock wiring harness is twice as heavy as needed for the 12 volt system.
As for the horn, it should work OK as long as you don't lay on it for an extended period of time. If you concerned you could use a heavy duty drop resistor, I think most of the reproduction parts guys sell them and you can check with a good local auto parts vendor, some one with people older than 25, they should be able to set you up with one.
Your horn will be fine as is using 12 volts (neg ground) - just quite a bit louder. I have four of the big 6V (pos grnd) trumpet horns on mine (12 volt neg grnd system) and they draw quite a bit of current when they all blast. But, I've never had a bit of problem. Funny the first time I blasted them there was a brown rust cloud that shot out of all four....Sounds like a train!
You will need to replace the horn relay with a 12 volt relay though.
And as Bob mentioned, the dimmer switch is a contact type and will be fine.
