chrome running boards rusting!!!

I have a '06 F150 with the chrome package that includes the chrome tubular running boards. First let me say that I have 60,000 miles on my truck and its still under the extended warranty (until 75,000). Upon washing it today I noticed that each running board has about half dozen spots where its rusting , about big around as a dime. I'm assuming that if I took it to the dealership they're just gonna say it's "wear and tear", there's nothing they can do about it....which I can understand. Anyone else run into this problem, I imagine that new ones from Ford cost a arm and a leg...maybe even a kidney. You guys just go with aftermarket ones?

I have an 06 with the chrome tubular step also and with 36000 miles there are some pits from rust starting. I plan on replacing them with aftermarket black composite cab steps at some point in the future.

I have aftermarket ones that mimic the stock 5" chrome ones from Ford, I am glad that they are made of a composite material!.......

It's common, especially for those of us who live in snow country. I've found the worst spots on my 07 and my former 03, are those areas where Ford's provided channels or pathways for water to drip down from the body. Like the area between the door and the fender. That's the first spot to start rusting. Dripping water, with a little bit of road chemicals (salts) and some small particles of road sand quickly wear thru the thin layer of chrome.

Talking with your dealer is likely a waste of time, but you never know you might catch them at a good time. I'd just hit the areas with some chrome polish and forget about it.

Have yours started to rust at the end of the tube where the plastic cap is pushed in? If not, they will... Ford's black painted tube steps were really horrible for this

Yeah mine rusted at the same spots your did...it was where water dripped down from the body above. I haven"t notcied mine rusting at the ends yet but it sounds like I have that to look forward to. Guess I should just deal with it until it gets really bad and then start shopping for some quality aftermarket ones.

twice a year with a good chrome polish...Turtle Wax for chrome takes out the spots.
Nature of the beast. Do the bumpers while you have the rags out!
