Replacement Alternator Question

Since I'm working overseas, the wife took the truck into Bl***wells in Phoenix and they quoted her $400 to change it out. In fact she almost volunteered to change it out hereself - and she could - but she's way too busy. I don't mind paying for the labor - is this way out of bounds????? Could they be installing a nice brand new high output ford oem and that's what it costs?

Oh yeah, they're charging another $400 to fix my blinkers/turnsignals, they say there's a module in the steering column....that's cracked...could that be real?

If I was home I'd do it myself, but I'm not.

I found some answers to my own question about alternators....for the alternator the rebuild option sounds good.
The turnsignal switch assembly is about $120.
"I put one on last March, when my OEM one started to fail, (and it was about over 150$ cheaper than what Ford wanted) it lasted about 3 months and the batt light came on again so I replaced it with another."
"I know the ambulance crews here go through the NAPA door like it is revolving. The NAPA lifetime warranty alternators get replaced here regularly ........... for a lifetime.
I bought a really well built alternator at WranglerNW. It was pricey but I do not expect it to fail.............. ever."
"I always have a local motor shop rebuild mine. Usually last a few hundred thousand miles for me. The rebuild job usually runs me about 60 bucks."

The prices are hard to say. The if the turn signals need a new multifunction switch it seems high. I don't know how much the parts are but the labor should be about 45 minutes. Same with the alternator. quick to change but it depends on if its a new or rebuilt alternator.
PS I think we always use the new alternators from Napa not the rebuilt ones.
Diesel Engine Repair Scottsdale Arizona, PowerStroke
Nate used to be a Ford diesel tech but he has had his own shop for a number of years now.
If you decide to get one from NAPA have your wife go to the Deer Valley store. It's west of the 17 about 27th Ave on the north side. The new store on 28 St and Bell must be still trying to pay for the new building because their prices are way higher than the 4 other stores in the area.
I agree with you tjbegs about using the new alternators, I'm sure that saves alot of problems.
Thank you for your replies.
There's a great bunch of Powerstroke owners there in the valley that would probably be willing to go swap out that alternator and multifunction switch for you. I wish I was still there so I could go do it.
Click the link and it will take you to the Arizona Powerstroke Group sign in page. It's a statewide club but most of the members are either in the valley or down in Tucson.
