just took out the rear window on my 79,it was an aftermart slider got some holes were water got throught.don't have the money for the body shop.was going to use fiberglass repair sand using a couple of layers then some body filler sand prime and paint.would that work?also i would love to rip the rain gutters above the windows they have caused rot on the corners of the cab, windshield.i was wondering if anybody had taken them off? was going to do this right before it gets painted. i can't be the only one who has had problems with this. any help? thanks.
As for the rust repair, you really need to remove most of the rust if you are going to use fiberglass or filler. Part of the problem is getting the rust you don't see, the stuff that's down past the holes.
I'd consider sand blasting or using Por15, ZeroRust or Hammertite. These will stop the rust where you can reach it and get it covered, then you can fill over that after scuffing with 40 grit.
You could use some Rust Mort or Prep & Primer (phosphoric acid) then apply some epoxy primer over that. I think this would be the better idea. the prep & prime can be had from Home Depot for about $6/qt. I'd use a spray bottle and spray a bunch into the holes, the scuff with a 150 & 400 grit, then apply a quality epoxy primer. then you can add some filler as needed.
