I recently bought an '89 F350 Crew Cab that is in desperate need of help; the problems are 1. the glow plugs are all dead, and the switch and wires are missing from the dash to the relay, 2. It burns or loses a gallon of oil every 60 miles. I've been told to be careful replacing the glow plugs as they can break off, and that a new CDR valve may cure the oil consumption. When it's running down the road it's seems to be smooth enough with no miss's or bogging down.Any suggestions????
You basically heard right. The CDR can cause problems of high oil consumption (or at least make them much worse) if not cleaned regularly or if its actually comming apart inside.
Also true about the glow plugs if a tip is swelled up. If you look closely at the glow plugs and can read "Beru" or "Germany" on them, then you are likely fine to remove and replace them. Have you done a continuity test on them?
4 have continuity, 4 do not,(glow plugs), also will have to replace dash switch for glow plugs and wiring as well, have heard about a solid state controller?? Can't seem to find one anywhere.
Did I read this right a gallon of oil every 60 miles if it is still running good there has to be a big leak somewhere that would be a lot fur the cdr to be the only culprit.
Under the right conditions, diesels an suck enough oil through the crank case vent hose to actually induce a runaway condition. Its rare, but it does happen. The CDR closes off at higher manifold vacuum settings to prevent high oil consumption, and in those more extreme cases, liquid oil getting in the intake. Maybe combine that with crusty valve seals, and I could see high oil consumption happening.
Can't say for sure if the CDR is mostly to blame for 1 gallon every 60 miles, but its not hard to check.

Before you replace anything in the dash or the controller, make sure you have at least 7 good glow plugs. Once the head count gets down to 6, the glow plug controller will not come on at all(as they are designed).
