I have a 79 supercab i want to lift. I have a few sets of lift block kits layin around that a friend gave me that he couldnt use. I havent ever used blocks before. Any opinions on this? thanks
Lift blocks are ok so long as you don't go too high with them. When I got my truck, the idiot before had 8" peices of box tubing in for lift blocks, and he just couldn't understand why the stock leaf springs had broken. When you lift something this way, it puts grater leverage on it, from the twisting of the axle when you accelerate or lean to the sides. Do not double stack the blocks!- only one set per vehicle. And the best ones are the ones made of solid steel, like what BDS Suspension sells. I've seen those cast aluminum lift blocks break already on the trail, and it wasn't pretty. He broke the blocks, the u-bolts, bent the drive shaft, ripped out the hydralic brake line and one of his e-brake cables.
If you really like beating on your truck, I wouldn't go any more than a 3" or 4" block, but even so, new springs would be the "correct" way to do it. Do not use blocks in the front end either, Just the back. In fact they're even illegal in the front in some states. Last but not least, use some good quality u-bolts, unlike one dummy I saw at a truck show once. He heated up and bent up some all-thread. haha classic!
