THe Next Step
I'm curious how to fill all the parts of the equation on this without heading to a real track.
as you cross the line, have someone stop the stopwatch and another glance at the speedo - low tech, but its essentially what the track does.
u sure there is no raceway near by? they usually have 'run what ya brung' fridays for like $15 3 passes (based on my local experiences)

31x10.50 tire with 4.11 gear ratio and E40D tranny:
30 mph / 1,000 rpm
45 mph / 1,500 rpm or 2,000 rpm with OD off.
60 mph / 2,000 rpm

That being said, it does depend on what you want to do with it. If you're looking for every day driveability, 4.88s are going to take away from that. But if you mainly off-road, then they're a good bet.
Thanks for the info on the trap speed. I knew how to get a quarter-mile, but I also know there are different aspects they test at a track, and was making sure it was the right one. There is a track here, but I've never been out to it.

I'm off to the car wash. I just don't have the energy today. I'll change my oil next weekend.

From your specs I'm assuming two wheel drive with a 9" rear end?
(mudding/2tracking) I doubt if your going to be rock climbing with a 2wd? If your going to use this rig for a daily driver I would suggest 3.73 gears. No lower than 4.56. (4.11's fall in the middle) These 300's were designed for low end torque not high end rpm. I'm thinking with 4.88's and the tall tires you'll be max out on the power band while driving down the highway. If you have a gear and driveline company close to home I would talk to them. They deal with this every day. Besides, if you don't have the tools (mic's and such) and have never set up a third member it would be cheaper to let them set it up. They would be the folks to talk to. They might even have one on the shelf ready to go. Anyhow, thats my two peenies worth, Good Luck!!

Off-road and off-the-line, yeah, 4.11, 4.88, maybe even some 5.38s (I think that's the ratio anyway). But for every day streetability, 3.73s, 4.11s.
The 300 makes it's peak horsepower at 3000 RPMs and stock doesn't do much above that.
If we're looking at ANY sense of highway travel, here's some numbers. This is assuming no overdrive and a 1:1 transmission ratio.
36 inch tires, 1:1 ratio @ 65mph
3.73: 2264
4.11: 2494
4.88: 2961
5.38: 3265
You would simply be pinning the engine just to maintain a decent highway speed of 65 with a 4.88 or 5.38. Granted, it will take more engine to get 36" tires to turn over decently, but not THAT much. I'd hate to be trying to go anywhere on the highway with 4.88s or 5.38s.
Had to edit after seeing abandonedbronco's post. Maybe I wasn't to far off with the 3.73's? Lets here from the gallery?

I agree. I'm at 2500 rpm at 60 mph. No OD and 3.70s.
I just think 36's are too big for a 300 anyway. I'd stay in the 32'' range. Gear swap to 4.10's and be happy with it. The bigger the tire, the harder it is on EVERYTHING.
But hey, it's all about what you want and what you want to do with it. You want 36'' tires? You're going to need some deep gears, something post 5.00
I think the bigger the tire, the better looking. I'm not saying yay or nay. All I'm saying is, your 300 would handle better all the way around with 32's and a 4.10 gear ratio.
With that said, I can cruise at 70 mph, but I have no real power. I can maintain the speed but that's about it. So maybe 3.73's are indeed what you will want.
I know I'm saying a lot. I hope I haven't confuzzled anyone.
