Gettin ready to paint my project F250. Ive got almost everything (reachable) down to bare metal. I plan on using an epoxy primer, but havent chosen the exact paint yet. I intend to do everything myself. If anybody out there has a suggestion on a spray gun that would be adequate for my needs I would appreciate it. I AM on a budget, and dont have any plans to paint anything else in the near future.
I guess the DeVilbiss GTI millenium series HVLP at $500 a pop is too much coin. Hmmmmm..... this is a tough one...... so many variables. The problem is your idea of a good job and mine are completly different. Never mind every body else who reads these posts. I don't want to recommend a gun that produces a job that looks good from a far but is far from good. You are only using it once so that says something. But, sounds like you want to use it for epoxy and top coats. That is asking too much. They are two seperate coatings with different characteristics. To complicate things I don't know if your paint job is metallic or solid. Are you using single stage or 2 stage paint? Believe it or not the more expensive the gun the easier it is to paint. The atomization is far better with the expensive guns. Atomization is important because it's linked to the fluid tip, needle and air cap. Automotive paints require certain air cap, needle and fluid tip combinations. Here's what I would recommend:
Buy a Devilbiss JGA clone spray gun. There are lots of them around. Go on the net for a picture of what one looks like. Find one with an 83 air cap on it. Use this for the top coat. See if you can buy a 30 air cap and use this for the epoxy and any other primers or primer surfacers. If you can't find this type of gun then look for an HVLP gun. HVLP's are great because they use less air pressure and paint. Look for an HVLP with a fluid tip at 1.3mm to 1.5mm.
