67 bronco tail lights

I just got done putting 1967 Bronco tail lights in my F350 (the ones with no reverse lights) and it got me thinking why in 1967 did Ford make two different tail lights one for the bronco (no revese light) and one for the pick ups (with a reverse light)? they are the same in every way other then the little white square. Does anyone know why they did this? I would think it would be cheeper to just make one for both the Bronco and the pick up trucks.

here are the 2 next to each other:
