engine identification

Is there identification stamped onto the block of the 6.9s' that indicates the year of the casting?

I am purchasing a second 6.9 engine that I am planning to rebuild but before I purchase it I would like to know if it is a '83-'84 cast or '85-'88.

I don't know about a number but the boss at the freeze plug hole where the block heater is noticibly built up on the later models.

Thanks for the replies. I will search my heads to see if I can find a number, it might be around the valvetrain. I imagine the freeze plug hole is reinforced in the second generation casting to keep the block from cracking, like 84 did.

Thanks again

That is exactly what they did and why it is a more desirable block to build.

Thanks for the response. The info you gave should help me identify the block.

If the block is towards the end of 1988 what ballpark does the serial numbers go to? This "latest style" of the 6.9 with the ribs around the head bolts I am taking describes the casting of the head, or do the ribs run vertical up and down the block? This should not affect mounting "old style" heads to the new block, right?

1988 should be a 7.3 you can't mount 6.9 heads on it.

Yes, 87 was the last year for the 6.9.

I misspoke (mis-typed) I meant "end of 87."

If it is an 87, you have the best of the 6.9 engines.

It should have 7.3 style rockers and glow plug system.

My '87 block has hex head bolts where the freeze plugs are on my '83. Is this evidence that the engine has been rebuilt or is this a difference between the years?

Sounds like someone has installed rubber expansion plugs instead of freeze plugs for some reason.
