Hey all did a little bit of searching and this is what I am thinking.
My 85 6.9l is burning about a quart of oil per 1000 miles.
It gives some blue white smoke at start up, but when it warms up it is no longer noticeable.
I am planning to try a clean up and reseal of my heads(valves and such) and put it back together. I have recently replaced the valve thing at the back of the engine, and cleaned it on my last oil change-
Engine has plenty of power, starts fine at any temperature.
sounds a lot like you have oil that is seeping through your valve guides. if you have a lot of miles on your heads i would deffinately say this is whats going on. but hey at least the tops of your cylinders are getting well lubed!! dont worry its not a big deal just make sure to keep oil.
If you plan on pulling the heads and getting a professional valve job, you will likely improve the oil consumption by repairing the valve guides and replacing the valve stem seals. Depending on how you drive, 1qt/1000 miles isn't a worry. If you "putt-putt" around I'd be more worried than if you are working the truck.
As TransTech said the oil may be part of it, but I have used both 10W30 and 15W40 Shell Rotella-T oil in my 100K plus engine and there is no difference in oil consumption between them (for me about 1 gt in 3-4K miles driving easy and up to 1 qt/1500 miles driving hard.. towing). That might not necessarily hold for you, or in all situations, or with different brands of oil. The heavier oil may help if some of your consumption is via the rings, but you likely use it anyway.
