So I have heard conflicting info. on what oil to use in the engine, transmition, transfer case and front and rear ends. So what should I use?
If the weather holds for this weekend I am wanting to replace all the fluids in the truck. It's a 1974 F100 FE390 (from a '66 Mercury), C6 auto (original to the truck), NP205, 9" rear, and Dana 44 front.
So what weights is everyone using for these applications? Also quantitys of all so I can make one trip to the parts store. Is there any advantage to running synthetics everything?
I was running straight 30 wt in the old 360 that was in it. Leaked like a stuck pig with 10w30, so running 30 wt it slowed down to a slow leak. But it didn't like that heavy of oil in the winter at -20.
I guess my biggest issue is with the C6, transfer case and front and rear ends. I just don't want to have to replace something after I just got it all put back together.

Thanks in advance,
Me personally I switch up Viscosities due to weather changes, but I own a 460, which really shouldn't be that much different. I run thnner oil in the winter 10W30, and 15W40 in the summer.
Just like my car 10W30 in the winterand 20W-50 summer.
OK...my fault...DexronIII/Mercon for the C6 is what it said in the book that I have at the house- it said that only the C4 uses Type F.
The good news is that now I have a real excuse to chuck it out. I've opened it three times since I've had it, and those three were only for minor things.
The 140W for the T-fer case was a typo...actually I think it said 10W40...or whatever you use in a manual trans...
Sorry for the mixup...I'll leave the numbers to the experts with the REAL manuals.
SHHHHOOOOO, glad we got that cleared up! I panicked there for a moment, and though I put the wrong fluid in my C4 a few months back, THANKS NUMBER DUMMY!!!!
Question, though...if you get a rebuilt pre-77 C4 or C6, would you then use DexronIII/Mercon, or would you still have to use Type F?
I'm guessing it has to do with the band material, right?
