Hey guys, I havent posted here in a while. I really havent done much with the truck after rebuilding it. The truck is a 1994 f150 4x4 with a 3.55 LS rearend.
Heres my question. My spider gears are toast the teeth are busted off. I am planning on just picking up a new ford racing trac-lok unit. Now, I was thinking of upgrading to 4.10 gears. This may be a stupid question, but do I need anything special or different to go to 4.10's? Can you guys give me any info or tips you may have?
nope nothing special for 4.10s as far as i know, my tip would be don't waste your money on the ford racing diff, just get some spider gears off ebay and a clutch rebuild kit and put new clutches in it and if you want more bite you can position the clutches differently in the diff, i forget how to do this though, or you could just weld up the spider gears although that might make it hard to get the C-clips off of your axles.
i just bought some 4.56 gears today if you want me to take step by step pics of the install i will as long as my hands arn't too dirty
The LS in your truck is a Trac-Loc, don't buy another one unless it's busted too, just repack the clutches. When you take it apart you'll find the clutch packs have metal plates back to back instead of alternating with friction plates, restack them so they do alternate, this will require 1 extra friction plate and 1 less steel plate per side.
Thanks guys for the info so far! So if I want to go with 4.10 gears I have to go with an open diff?
The only reason I was looking at the ford trac-lok unit is cause I was assuming it would be easier to install, since it would be the same as what its replacing and it also will accept the tone ring for the speedo.
I have never really done any rearend work before. I may just keep the 3.55 gears. Would swapping either a trac -lok unit or an aftermarket be a fairly easy job?
I have pulled axles and all that before, I just keep hearing all this stuff about shimming, I thought if I just swapped them it would be simpler?

Tbird, why didnt you just tell him to weld the pinion to the ring gear, then he'd be set. Hah!
I would just put a detriot true trac in it then you wont have to do clutch packs any more...I have one & like it & everone i know does to...Havent heard anything bod about them... They will accept the tone ring...Lew
If you're not concerned with mileage, the 4:10's will make a difference. However, with 4.10's, you'll at least want to do a LSD rebuild because traction will become more of an issue. Either way you go (with gears) the limited slip rebuild kits are inexpensive and it fairly easy to rebuild the one you have. One thing I would recommend is to pull the axles completely out and push a rag through the axle tubes, from the outside to the center; a broom stick makes a good push stick.
