New to 4x4 2000 F250 SD, while on a gravel road yesterday, up hill, I switched to 4x4 herd it engauge, took off, loaded with trailer, rear wheels would spin, put it in low 4x4 again same results. wondering why the front wheels didn't spin. seemed like the 4x4 was not working.
I have the hubs set on auto. did'nt try it in lock.
When the front hubs are in the "AUTO" position, vacuum is used to engage the hubs when the you put it into four wheel drive along with the shift motor putting the transfer case into four wheel drive. Both systems need to be working to have 4wd.
Most likly you have a leak in the vacuum lines running to the hubs. You are hearing the transfer case going in but the hubs are not.
Try locking the hubs in manually and engaging the four wheel drive switch. It that works, look for the vacuum leak. You can pull the vacuum lines from the front hubs and see if it is pulling a vacuum. If not, you have a leak leading to the hubs. If it has vacuum, the leak is in the hub o-ring.
Some people experience the heater moving to defrost mode when there is a leak in the 4x4 system.
Ok thanks. this really clears it up for me. I was having problems understanding Y I could hear the transfer case enguaging, but didn't have 4 wheel drv.
Also, sometimes if the truck doesn't move at all the front won't lock in. It takes a little movement sometimes to get it to slip into the splines on the hubs. You might check that before tearing a bunch of stuff apart.

And, it has to be within the first 40 seconds after turning the switch to 4x4. The initial vacuum pulse is only around 40 seconds long. After that, the hubs will not auto lock.

thanks again.
I had the same problem and my vac. lines from the chassy to the wheel were broken. $3.00 worth of hoses got it back online. 2 years later a wheel bearing went bad, seal failed and the 4wd quit again. New wheel bearing and seal fixed this. This was not a 4wd ESOF issue but a bearing failure. I like and keep my ESOF functional. Nice being able to use 4WD without getting out of the truck.

This is not the first time I have seen this posted. I have been stuck in my pasture a few times, I turn the switch to 4X4 not moving, because I am stuck, then I start moving thanks for the front assist. This has happened at the beach in the sand also. I wonder why mine works like this but not the others.

Random luck - I too, got stuck a few times while not moving, turned the switch and it went right in. That was before the latch on the hub broke and it wouldn't stay in after the initial vacuum pulse went away.
There is, however, a chance that the splines are not lined up, and the hub won't lock. Then, you have to lock it by hand, OR - bounce the suspension once or twice then turn back to 4x2 and back to 4x4, and it'll go in. Don't try it with the rear wheels spinning though. GRRRRRIIIIINNNNDDDDDD....
