Surging during cold idle, normal?
When my truck is cold it makes a surging sound through the exhaust. Sounds like a jet and then doesn't. It continues to go through these cycles until I tap the brake. Is this normal? Is this the EBPV? Is this hurting mileage? How do I fix this if it is not normal?

The jet sound is because of your EBPV closing off. When you tap the brake or the go pedal it opens the valve. Does it do it when it has warmed up? When it is very cold here my truck seems to hunt for a moment to so then the EBPVcloses up, high idle kicks in and she screams like a jet until warmed up.

Justin, my previous truck ('99 PSD) did the exact same thing at the exact same temps. I cleaned my EBPS and tube and it went away.

Justin, my truck was doing the same thing, it is not normal and I believe the sensor was bad. I removed the tube and sensor and both were clean. I just removed it, capped the fitting in the manifold and tied the wires out of the way. I'm also wondering if the bad sensor had something to do with my terible fuel mileage, which was at 10mpg on the last tank.

The plug with the two wires that controls the EBPV under the turbo, pigtail those into the cab on a switch. Then find a 12v power to power the valve when you throw the switch. I added another switch on the hot wire to my switch to kill the system for the winder alowing me to have control over the computer to keep the EBPV off.
Thats the simple version and am sure there are a ton more ways of doing this.

just the EBPV switch. The second switch I put between the EBPV switch and the keyed power. It makes the EBPV switch dead and reversing your EBPV switch gives you control over the PCM if you want it on or not. The PCM still has control over the EBPV but its up to you, with the switch to alow it to turn on or just stay off.

and I am not sure of the EBP sensor hurting fuel mileage. I think I may have damaged mine when cleaning. I just put it back together and ran it. Thats why I added the second switch because I was geting Peed off trying to drive and the EBPV would stay shut and never open.
Maybe someone else can chime in, does a damaged or non working EBP sensor hurt fuel mileage??
