I am in the process of upgrading my transmission. I have a 75 ford f100 with a 302 and 3 speed (3 on the tree). I am replacing the motor with a upgraded 302 with mild cam, edelbrock 750, intake, etc. I wanted to upgrade the transmission at the same time and was curious what advice anyone can give me on what to upgrade to ? I would like to upgrade to 4 speed on the floor but am unsure what transmission will work best with my upgraded 302. I also will be towing a 20' bowrider fiberglass boat. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks
A 750 CFM carb on a 302? So this is a high performance, high rev motor?
Define "upgrade" with respect to the trans. Do you want a performance trans, like a hot rod?
Or do you want a stronger truck transmission?
Performance: Ford toploader. Might bolt right up, you might need a different bell (truck bells deeper than car, check/measure/decide) Shifter may be too far back, but you can fiddle with it methinks, based on other posts here.
The 2.78 first is maybe a bit taller than your 3 gear, but the gear spacing is great. (wide ratio--close ratio first is 2.32, way too high for your application)
Truck trans? Take your pick of T18/T19/NP435, all discussed here.
Thanks for the feedback. I misspoke on my last email as I was suppossed to get the engine previously referred to in my original post from a friend who owened me money. He backed out and I am now just using my stock 302 v8 and getting the edlebrock 600 cfm and edelbrock intake. Just ordered from JEGS and parts will be here Tuesday. When referring to upgrade, I just want to get good 4 spead that can handle towing boat and a little bit of horsepower. I will end up doing a bit more to motor in the future, but not too much...cam, headers, etc. Not too interested in tranny gear as I wont be doing any 4x4. I hear T19 or 18 will do the trick. I dont know what my axle ratio is ? Only had the truck for 6 months. Only mods had been a flowmaster supper 44 exhuast.
Get a small block ZF-5. Really nice gear spacing plus overdrive. Theyre awesome trannys. BTW, 600 CFM is WAY too much carb for a 302 thats anywhere near stock. I have a 600 on my 400 and its too much. A 470 or a 500 would be more in the ballpark for a stock 302. If i couldnt get a ZF id go with an AOD, its and auto with overdrive. Thats what i would do as far as "upgrades". Any trans with a small block bell will work.
