Fuel Filter light on, no start

Drove the truck home from the shop where it had its safety inspection done, about 15km (10miles)
It ran fine, good power... I was happy.
Then it lost power and quit, like it ran out of fuel. Tank is half full, fuel filter is full also.
It will start once every few minutes but quit right away again.
Does this sound like and IPR issue?

Fpr issue sounds like you need to clean the screen. Its at the top of the bowl on the driver side. If you need more info someone wiil chime in.

Thx Bobby, I'll look at that in the morning., getting a little chilly and dark outside now.

Just went outside, truck sat for 2 hours at -10 C, and it fired right up and ran fine.

I can locate the FPR. How do I get to the screen?

Take the fuel filter out, on the inside at the top driver side there will be a hole if you go to the pass. side of the truck and look with a flash light you will see a screen if not you should see dirt build up. If dirty lightly take a Q tip with the cotton taken off or something that wont leave anything behind and clean it till you see a clean screen. Dont push to hard to damage they cost a lot of $ to replace. Good luck and keep us posted.

Check dip stick on oil level. These trucks will lose power like running out of fuel if low on oil.

Could also be CPS (cam position sensor) going south.

No problems before getting it inspected ??

Since the filter light is on you might want to replace the filter also. Definately clean the screen while in there.

my filter light once came on when the truck died, had plenty of fuel. so just to try something i switched tanks and tried to start. after cranking for awhile it fired up and ran strong. never did it again. it was pretty cold that day, so i thought maybe the fuel in the first might have been gelling up. Would this cuase the fuel filter light to come on?

Oil level is good and CPS was just replaced as a preventative measure.

Cleaned the little screen with a Q-tip. I was quite dirty. Quite possible that it was restricting flow substantially.
And eventhough the filter was only 2 weeks old and didn't get used for more them one hour of driving, I replaced it.
I also drained the water separator last night while the engine was still warm.

The truck started fine once it was cold and seems to run fine now.
Will take it out for a good run today. I just hope it won't leave me standed again.

Ran the truck for abit today, just around town as I don't trust it on the highway yet.
Filter light came on twice but went back out and now the water in fuel light comes on and goes off again after a few minutes of driving. I have opened the water drain twice today, just in case there some to drain.
How long should I leave the drain open?

Once it lost nearly all power, like it was running on a few cylinders only. Even in neutral it wouldn't rev over 2000rpm.
I pulled over, and started pulling the connectors for the under valve cover harness. Drivers front, engine ran worse, same for drivers rear plug. Pulled passenger front and it stalled. Fired it up and it ran normally again.

The connectors is puzzling to me.

But when I drain my bowl I drain it till it quits. Sometimes it doesn't want to drain too good so I open the valve then crank truck for a few seconds then shut it down. That should blow any trash in the tube out. It will however make a mess under truck. If you water in fuel light is coming on it sounds like you have some pretty nasty stuff in the fuel bowl.
I would seriously consider removing the bowl and flushing out with engine degreaser and flushing well.

Thanks Neal

I am used to being able to see the stream of water/fuel from the water separator on other vehicles. But i'll just look underneath and was for it to stop running.

Yes i am a little confused myself about the powerloss and wiring. It could barely pull its self along in second gear.

Powerloss explained.....
Did it to me again, a few blocks from home, made it into the driveway. Shut it off and oulled the fuel filter and behold......the bowl was empty.

So it seems that its starving for fuel. Which makes me think its the mechanical lift pump. Is that correct?

Any secret in replacing it?

It may be in your case, but I have put 3 new lift pumps in and I am still having the same problem. My light comes on when push the go pedal down about half way and more. Other than that it will idle all day long.
