I have a 2003 superduty with driver door that does not shut all the way.
The truck has never been in a wreck. It has been lifted so I think what happend to it is the previous onwner would pull himself up using the door instead of the handle.
Is there a way to replace the little locking mechanism in the door very easy?
Do you think that could be the problem?
Any other ideas?
Not sure if it is the same, but my dad (2004 F250 SC SB 4x4 6.0L TD) has the same issue. On the driver's side door, you have to really slam it to shut it properly, otherwise is only partially latches.
His is not lifted and has running boards to step onto, so he hasn't been hoisting himself up using the door. I can't seem to find much on this in my repair manual, so hopefully someone knows how to adjust it.
My 05 250 CC had the same issue. The door latch in the door was wore out. Simple to change as long as you spend the extra money and get the latch with the new actuator attached.
This is a known problem with the SD's. Im not sure what years are affected but many don't shut well without a hefty push. Some also have the problem with the lower right corner of the door not being flush with the body. Mine exhibts both.
I have my 250 in the shop right now having the rear passenger door latch replaced. I ordered the latch but it came in without the actuator. The mechanic broke the darn actuator trying to remove it.

Ditto for me. Just recently had the latch replaced on the drivers door. Easy to break the actuator it seems. I had to come back after the actuator was ordered and the bodyshop installed that too. When it was broke it kept the radio from turning off when the door opened and the dome light from coming on. ( Warning about leaving your truck and draining your battery!) Before the latch was replaced my door was sounding like it was going to pop open when I hit bumps. An adjustment was made...and it seemed to help....but I replaced it anyway.
I kind of have the same thing going on with my SC. The rear driver side door upper latch does not latch all the way, so the front driver door latch feels loose also. Both doors rattle over bad bumps in the road....starting to drive me nuts. Where are you guys buying your latches? I've checked auto part stores online with no luck. On Ebay I see the actuators but I don't think the latches are included. Hopefully it's not a dealer only part.
I think that the door hinges take a lot of the abuse as well. My 1997 F250 driver's side door is really out of alignment and I can clearly see that the lower hinge needs to be repaired or replaced.
I was getting some paint work done so the body shop did it along with the rest of the work. I know they had to get the parts from the local Ford dealership.
my rear passenger door (extended cab) was making those same noises. Found the bottom latch was not catching used some silicone spray and worked it back & forth now no noise. Not sure if this helps.
I wonder if there is a how to mod out there on this issue. Seems like it should be easy to fix. How easy is this to fix and what is the part number. My issue is: the door shuts it just does not shut completely.
I figured out this issue for my dad on his 2004 (I never experienced it on my 99). I loosened the bolts holding the striking latch to the rear door (The non-moving hoop part on the front of the half door). I tapped the strike portion outward with a hammer as far as it would go (Barely moved). I retightened the bolts and it works PERFECT! My dad had asked the dealer on 2 different occasions to take care of it and they said that there was nothing they could do - short of replacing the latches and the hinges.
I had a hard time believing that it was that simple, BUT IT WAS! It didn't even take 10 minutes and the door shuts perfectly (Without using heavy force). It has worked just fine for several months now!
