You can get a good idea of the looks if you Google "Joe's Trucks". He sells Ford trucks (with emphasis on 78 and 79), and it seems he typically paints the grille shell. It's not my cup of tea, but some people seem to like it.
I saw a truck on Ebay 6 months back that was Red with matching grill inserts. It didnt look horrible but i didnt like it either. You could always give it a shot and if you dont like it, I think they are fairly cheap through LMC, $35 each side for the pre-78's
Edit: To add to this, My father-in-law painted his '68 chevy's grill, bumper and all to match the truck, I've never liked this because accenting with chrome/polish always makes your vehicle stand out and look great, but it's only an oppinon. To each his own and you'll never know untill you just paint it and see what it looks like to you.
Last time painted my 79, I painted the entire truck and grill shell white and then painted the dent red, and the grill insert and headlight doors red too. I liked it, and it looked pretty sweet. Quite 'modern'. I am currently re-building this truck again, and haven't decided if I will paint it again or go back to chrome this time.
heres just my inserts, looks better than stock IMO......im not a big fan of painting the shell, but i think it does look good on some trucks, like the green one
I think this will look pretty sweet when it's all together. Keep in mind that I will have two wide and two narrow charcoal metallic gray stripes running up the hood, over the roof, down the back, and down the spoiler and tailgate. The rear bumper will be the same metallic charcoal gray.
dude, thats awesome....whats up with above your rear tire?
Speed holes, man. The bed is full of 'em, but at least they cut down on my wind resistance and weight.
Seriously though, that is tape on huge rust holes. The PO got tired of looking at all the rust.
I don't know who did more damage to it...the 2nd owner who "partially restored" it with no knowledge and crappy old parts (and probably crappy new parts too), or the 3rd owner who tried to hold the 2nd owner's bass-ackwards work together with gum, tape, and paper clips.
Since I only live seven miles from the PO, I am looking forward to driving the finished product back over to his house and letting him drool on his shoes.
