Question rear diff

hey all. question for anyone who can help. i have a 2003 f-150, 4x4, ext cab with the 5.4. love my truck but......according to the rear end tag it has the limited slit rear end in it. when taking turn it feels like the spiders are welded and there is a whirring sound that seems to pick up speed even though I'm not. the rear tires are skipping and hoping around the turn. but when I'm spinning on snow or ice it acts like an open diff. one wheel spins only and no noise. could this be something in the front diff not going back to 2wd maybe. I'm planning on taking the cover off the rear in the near future to take a look so..... anyone else had this problem that maybe able to offer me any suggestion on what may be going on would be appreciated.

rear diff

yes, i only hear the whirring coming form rear in 2wd but it all most feels like I'm in 4wd when turning but cant feel it in the steering wheel like if it was in 4wd. i can hear what almost sounds like a bad wheel bearing coming from LF when in 4wd only, since i bought it couple of years ago but bearing are good. I'm not sure where to start looking for the problem but it has to be remedied asap. not good. chewing up tires. i have been a licence mechanic for 10+ years but at Toyota and GM dealerships, not Ford so not real familiar the with the NEWER FORDS FWD systems but always been a "ford man" , so i know what your talking about when talking the talk. thanks for the support.

I would start looking and at front hubs. It being a newer truck I imagine it has full time locking hubs?

If the one hub is locking up then you would get the sensation of 4wheel drive while in 2wheel drive hence why it feels normal in 4wheel drive.

If its an electric problem then it may be a solenoid going bad or it could be just a bad hub.

If your hubs appear to be normal then you might want to go ahead and take a look at the t-case. What kind of t-case are you running?

I'm with you on not knowing much about the fords I have never owned one and never will. But its all the same principle regardless of the manufacture.
