A/C compressor to air compressor

Is it possible to convert a factory piston-type A/C compressor to a simple air compressor? Something like this might be pretty useful to a 'wheeler or someone like me who will be taking their truck camping in some very remote areas.

It could also open the door for a CTIS system.

Usually you use an air smog pump. The A/C compressor relies on a lot of lubrication in the actual air lines for longevity. Without Googling it, I would say it wouldn't really work.

But, to use the smog pump or grab an actual compressor from a junk heavyduty truck would be the way to go. It's what we did at work to fabricate a compressor on an 86 F700.

Yes. The York style A/C compressor can easily be converted into air compressors. They do tend to pump some oil out. See ::Kilby Enterprises::

It is a common conversion if you have the York style compressor. The York is great for this application because it has a regular oil reservoir. If the compressor is not mounted horizontally, oiling shouldn't be an issue.

You should also be able to do some net searching and find plenty of information on this swap.
