Is it possible to convert a factory piston-type A/C compressor to a simple air compressor? Something like this might be pretty useful to a 'wheeler or someone like me who will be taking their truck camping in some very remote areas.
Usually you use an air smog pump. The A/C compressor relies on a lot of lubrication in the actual air lines for longevity. Without Googling it, I would say it wouldn't really work.
But, to use the smog pump or grab an actual compressor from a junk heavyduty truck would be the way to go. It's what we did at work to fabricate a compressor on an 86 F700.
It is a common conversion if you have the York style compressor. The York is great for this application because it has a regular oil reservoir. If the compressor is not mounted horizontally, oiling shouldn't be an issue.
