As I was checking the tire pressure on my 77 F150 today, I noticed something odd about my drivers-side leaf spring pack. Closer inspection revealed the following:
I don't know how long it's been like this but it doesn't look recent. Now, eventually, I'm going to have to get this replaced but finances are real tight at the moment so I'm looking for some kind of temporary "band-aid" fix I can use to patch it back together until I can get around to replacing it.
My thought was to lift that side of the truck up to get the load off that wheel; pound that loose leaf back into place; then use a U-bolt/shackle to keep it contained so it doesn't keep sliding out like that. I'm not carrying heavy loads and I don't haul trailers or anything like that so I'm not sure whether or not doing this will have that much affect on the "springiness" on that side.
My 73 F-250 Highboy did the exact same thing...Only I romped on the gas and it spit the piece out on to the road....I stopped...threw the piece in the back of the truck...and haven't done a thing with it since...still drive it that way.....Eventually i WILL get a new leaf pack...but it's working fine...so I'm not 2 worried.
It shouldn't hurt anything. You will just have some "sag" in your truck. I would do what you said with the clamp for a band aid and that will work for now
