Wanted to run a few things by some of you gents.
I have a 2000SD 4wd with stock trans and computer. Only mods are 4" exaust, ccv delete, and big intake filter.
Some time ago my trans light (on shifter) started to blink on occasion. I have changed the sensors in the trans and still have the problem on occasion. Lately, the engine seems to lope at constant speed. I assumed that the trans is just about to crap out and desided that it is time to rebuild it regardless if this is the problem. I have ordered parts to do this and anticipate tackling that project either this weekend or early next week.
My problem is that it is cold here and the loping may be the ebpv. Does anyone have a good write up on the benefits of deleting the whole system and or a good how-to on EBPV delete?
If I am not mistaken the od light flashing means your VSS sensor on the top of the rear axle is bad or has a bad connection. Try that before doing anything with the trans.

That can be one of many reasons that the OD light blinks on the shifter. A bad VSS also makes your speedo act erratically until you hit 35 mph or so.
My understanding is that the OD light flashes when the PCM sees too much variation between the two sensors. This is commonly because one or both of the sensors has a problem but can be an indicator that the trans is slipping.
I had this conversation with AAMCO and they insisted that it had to be the sensors. $100 or so later, I still have a problem. The other reason that I believe the trans is slipping is because the problem arises (with out fail) when towing.
I am hoping that rebuilding the trans will make the loping problem go away but I am suspecting that the loping is from the EBPV and would like info about deleting the system.
Right now, I am mainly making short trips so the possibility of the engine being cold is very real. The sound and feel, when the lope occurs, is as if you just let off the throttle and back on very sublely. If you are not the driver, you probably wouldn't notice.
Concerning codes, I had them pulled at AAMCO but that was a long time ago. I have a cheap actron scanner but it is not worth the packaging it came in.
My old truck ('99 PSD Superduty) had a loping, surging-type idling only at startup with temps in the thirties. It would go away when you drove off though. I did this procedure (Welcome to guzzle's Exhaust Backpressure Sensor Cleaning Maintenance Web Page) and it fixed it right up. My sensor was all fouled with soot. But I'm not sure if my symptoms were the same as yours.
I will check that out. I have done that in the past but it has been a long time.
When I have the trans out, I am going to check my up pipes, change my glow plugs, and go over or remove my ebpv system.
I ripped out the EBPV & pedestal when I put in my van turbo (with non-EBPV oulet). It's a good mod and I haven't seen any disadvantage to losing it. The ONLY one I can think of is if you want to use it as an exhaust brake...
I hope you find your problem!! So Am I to understand you're doing your own rebuild?
Pop,
I've never done a transmission and still wouldn't let AAMCO do the work. I just wanted to use their free diagnostics.
I am going to rebuild the trans along with a buddy of mine who has done a couple of them before. The kit I am getting comes with instructions so it shouldn't be that bad.
Can't be more complicated than an Apache and I was fixing those when I was a kid....
