With all the improvements in paint over the years I can think of NO good reason to use lacquer at all anymore. At the very least I would look at a single stage enamel.
I know I didn't answer your ? but reading between the lines it would appear that you are wanting to shoot lacquer.
I used lacquer once and only once. I painted a truck in september; it was perfect. In january, got cracks on the roof and hood where water spots were. A friend of mine had it happen to 6 vehicles.
i'm pretty sure you can shoot laquer over enamel. when i was a kid at the paint shop, thats how we did all the blend patches. also have shot laquer primer many times over enamel, with no problem. and then repainted with enamel over the whole thing. last car i painted in laquer was about 12 or 13 years ago. it's a lot of work, multiple coats and color sanding, then rub it out. intresting note, was just at the paint store to pick up some dupont 101 primer, they no longer sell it. had to use ppg URETHANE! TALK ABOUT HEALTH HAZAEDS!
Thanks everyone. I was not contemplating a 'full shoot' of laquer at all. Just some color work waaaay under the dash up by the defroster and upper firewall on the 55 effie. I have metal etched and primed, and mixing enamel for such a small shot seemed silly. I have some of the "Duplicolor' crap (which claims to be laquer and I will never buy again) that is extremely close to the Banner Blue enamel just put on 98% of the body and interior. Just looked so nice I was motivated to get the nooks and crannies nice. Like the underside which gets a shot of chassis black.
