I've searched this forum and thedieselstop for some electric fan conversion info. nothing with solid info, just opinions. Any body know for sure how many CFM these stock fans pull? If i do this swap im also thinking about swapping a 6.0 intercooler in so im not sure of this is going to affect the rad cooling
i do remember that being a topic on here not to long ago. If i am remembering correctly they said the elec fans from the taurus' were the most compatable, but there needed to be 2 on there and the power draw was close to maxing out the alternator running both of them.
Flex-a-lite offers the " monster", with up to 5500 cfm but with a 28 amp draw and fits vehicles with a 32'' + core. would that be good enough? they claim 17 hp and 2-3 mpg increase. that probably on a gasser tho. not sure what my gains would be, if any. i've got a manual transmission and i rarely tow anything and even then the only time my truck overheated was pulling 11,000 lbs up the Coquihalla, in first gear.
There was a guy on oilburners that installed two taurus/lincoln fans on his truck, which are big two-speed fans that move a LOT of air and pull a LOT of amps (close to 100 amps each at startup and I think 40-50 each while running). Nice fans and cheap to get, but a big amp draw.
I'd like to put two of those fans in a nice shroud, with a two stage thermostat switch...so that one comes on at say 190 degrees, and the other doesn't come on until maybe 220 or so.
Save your money, I had two Flex lite fans on mine.
The electric draw was high, and the longest I got the fan blades to stay on the hub was 2 years.
Those are not meant to be full time replacement fans.
I got a couple replaced under warranty, but the aggravation and time changing them was not worth the fuel savings.
Also when the blades flew off one of the fans, the radiator had to go to the radiator shop for a repair, so there were even more costs involved beside the fans.
Ya, i checked out oilburners and there are several guys on there that have done it, and some pretty in-depth discussions about it and it doesnt seem economical to me anymore. it would be over $700 for me to install it and if im lucky i would gain 1mpg. thats a few tanks of fuel before i get my money back. so heres another question for you. is $175 for a 03 7.3 intercooler a decent deal?
Hi: Been away for awhile. I've got a setup from a windstar ( 2 fans). I've siamesed them into the original shroud. I'll be testing them in about three weeks. I had to change one of the motors because it interfered with the PS pump pulley.
yeah i never ended up doing it. actually selling my IDI. Check out oilburners.net . One guy has gone with electric fans on quite a few truck i believe. username Agnem. check in ' IDI tech articles' . there is an article on the conversion written by him.
