1982 351w timing

I was given an 82 351w with all the stock duraspark stuff removed, its got a 4 barrel carb on a edelbrock intake and a mallory unilite dist and coil. The magnetic pickup by the balancer is gone and there is no timing degree scale .The only thing left is the stock balancer has a groove in it and there seems to be a pointer on the right front ( passenger side) timing cover by the old magnetic pick up mount .When the groove is lined up to the pointer is that supposed to be tdc or the correct timing btdc for a stock motor.With a timing light hooked up that balancer grove is over on the drivers side not even close.motor runs smooth but sometimes hard to start when cold (manual choke on carb) unless you rotate the dist to the right spot then will fire right up.figured I would get some info first before ripping into the motor.The motor just turned 100k so should the timing chain set need to be changed yet .I remember something about stock came with nylon gears or something.I can move the crank a little before the dist rotor moves ,maybe the chain skipped a tooth?
