Chip precautions

I just bought an '02 f250 with a 7.3 in it and was thinking about buying a banks six-gun chip. I was wanting to know if theres anything else i should get along with it to make sure nothing gets torn up...ive heard of bad things happening when people just buy a chip and nothing else such as transmission damage and stuff like that

Get a set of gauges for EGT and Tranny temps. Install EGT probe pre turbo , just about 2-3 inches past the exhaust manifold. Increse EGT's is more fuel... so you can drive by EGT's... the lower the better for economy.

I think for tuning your going to want to do custom tunes from DP, I believe that's what the majority of 7.3 guys are running on their trucks. You might want to go down to that forum and see what all they say. Gauges I would do. EGT, tranny temp, and boost are the usual 3 to get. Do you have the auto tranny? If so, be prepared with regard to the converter even on a stock 7.3, the converter is the weak link of that drivetrain. If you go custom tuning that could help work around that weak link, I don't think modules like Banks, Edge, Bullydog do anything with regard to that, I know that they don't for the 6.0 and the torqshift tranny.

Do you plan to get too wild with hp or is it basically going to be just a chip?

I had a 2000 F350 with the 7.3L, automatic and 3.73 rear end. The truck had been chipped when I bought it so I already had the gauge set, a free flow intake and a 4" turbo back exhaust with no muffler. I installed a Bully Dog 6 position chip in it. It was $500 very well spent. I pulled a 21 foot camp trailer and a 24 foot gooseneck stock trailer. I basically just ran it on the plus 50 setting a left it there. Plus 75 and plus 110 ran too hot of egt. I could pull all day with it and the tranny shift points were set up with the chip as well. It was a great setup and I would do it again hands down. When I was running in town it was great fun to pull up to the little Honda boys and blow their rice rockets off the line and into the next county. I am sure their girlfriends were not impressed that they were not only beat by a huge 4 door long box beast, but left in a cloud of black smoke as well. More fun when the windows were down. Yet I digress. That is my only experience with chips. I will say I did have to replace a very expensive injector harnass. I don't know if the chip caused that or not. I, did, in a fit of stupidity, sell that truck when diesel hit $4.30 gal last summer.

Good Luck!!
