I have 1989 E350 will not charge unless the starter solenoid s wire is unplugged what would cause this?? I think I have solenoid is bad backfeeding through s wire does this sound right.
Drove 40 miles on high beam lights looked dim stopped in next town shut van off battery dead found jump got started unplugged s wire drove home 21 miles started right up this morning tested solenoid after starting has voltage on s wire terminal and lug going to starter this is with s wire disconnected
I would get a voltmeter and check the voltage on the battery while the engine is running. It should be around 14.5v if it's charging. I suspect it is charging, but I would check to make sure.
You may have a drain. You can hook up a testlight like the diagram below, and if it lights, you have a drain. You can then experiment with the "s" wire, by taking it off, and see if the light goes out.
When running I unplug the s wire the engine will speed up. I am going to replace the solenoid as this one looks to be original. Pulled it apart and the contacts are burned almost through. I have never had this happen before so this will be a first for me.

I hope it fixes it, but it would be very strange. There is no power on the red/blue(the wire that goes to "s") unless the ignition key is sprung all the way to the start position. And let's say for some strange reason, something happened in the solenoid, and voltage from inside the solenoid got onto the s wire and ran backwards down the red/blue. It really would not do anything, since it would stop at the ignition switch, which would be open unless the switch was moved to start.
This is a very strange problem. Has any wiring been done lately? Any stereo's added?
If the solinoid by chance connected inside the battery termanal to the s termanal the current whould travel through the coil of solinoid to the ground not up wire to ign. switch.

Would that activate the solenoid and make the starter run all the time?
You are going to have to get a voltmeter and do some testing I believe. I would be curious to know how much or what kind of voltage is on the "s" wire.
