AOD Tranmission

What would cause an AOD transmission to require an extra quart of fluid or so to not slip? Is this a sign of impending failure or wear? I have a Crown Vic with this problem. Any ideas?

I wonder if it has a plug-in type fluid filter? If it does then the filter may be dislodged.

someone may have forgot to use the cork gasket on the filter

Can this happen while being driven?

This car just recently started delaying going into gear, or acting like it was in neutral when actually in drive. It would grab if you revved the car up a little while in drive, so I added more fluid and it started working. It had not been serviced for about a year, and I checked the fluid level and it was right. The only problem is the fluid tends to leak out around the fill tube when you turn the car off. Any ideas how to fix this? Thank you.
