frame paint suggestions

The project is a '53 f-100 with a fiberglass front end. I'm seeing the point where I'll be ready to paint my frame and need some advise. I want a paint that will be as resistive to road debris, rocks and such as possible, and with the flip front end up I want nice detailed shiny frame rails.. so I want a slick finish... any recommendations for a paint type ??

One suggestion was Imron polyurethane, but someone else said thae Imron would chip easily cause it was so hard ??? guidance please ??

I would recommend Por15 as it is a rust encapsulator as well as chip resistant. Just do a search on Por15 and you'll get a lot of feedback about it.

I have used it on my frame after sandblasting it and it looks great. Dried hard. The only drawback is that without topcaoting it, it is prone to fading from UV rays.

imron is the original urethane paint. it is as tough as it gets, also toxic as hell. use a good organic mask, if not a whole face system, and gloves. this includes while mixing too.

If you do end up using the POR-15, topcoat it with thier "Chassis cote" black and that will eliminate any UV problems. It comes in gloss and semi gloss and can be put on with a foam roller. It looks great after drying. It won't break the bank either. I painted my whole frame, suspension & axles with one quart of chassis cote and still had a little dab left over. Good luck,

Phil,

Had to pipe in here and say "Great" photo gallery. I just love seeing the step by step stuff.

I've also used POR-15 on our frame, springs, inner & outer cab floor and just about anywhere else that will not be exposed to the sun. Also sat down with a artist paint brush and as Steve took them old nuts, bolts & washers off, I'd hand paint them for added protection.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 25-Sep-02 AT 06:55 PM (EST)]It depends on your budget. If you have the money to do it, have your frame powdercoated. Its rock hard, and wont chip or peel and is smooth as glass when its cured.

If not, Por-15 is the best way to go, as its relatively inexpensive, and is easy to apply. Por-15 is just a step below powdercoating, in my opinon, and is just as good. Just make sure to get as much rust off as possible before using it, even though it can be applied over rust, removing the rust will produce a great finish with Por-15

thanks for all the suggestions...

I think I'm going with a urethane for the following reasons

1. can't powder coat... frame surface imperfections (pitting) that
will show and you can't use filler with p.c.

2. With the flip front end I want a contrasting color for the
frame/suspension parts that will look good with my yellow so I
need to have my color choice and POR-15 or Correlless don't
have the choices I want

3. Rust coverage or removal isn't necessary, the frame is blasted
and primed.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-Sep-02 AT 06:48 PM (EST)]John, you can topcoat POR-15 with any color or any paint you want if you first cover the POR-15 with "thier" primer(Tie-Coat). That's what I had to do inside my bed. It goes on the same way, dries streak free and sands beautifully. Then you cover it with whatever you want. POR-15 also makes other colors you can apply over thier paints. I think it's called Hard-Coat. ??
Another alternative is a paint called Zero-Rust. It's very simular to POR-15, Miracle paint and some others. Only difference is it comes in several colors, and comes on spray cans as well as qts and gallons.
Good luck,

Carlene, thanx for the kind words. I too painted all the bolts brackets and screws. I hate rust !! I hope to add some more pix pretty soon.
