I have visited a couple of sites for LED lights and am lost.
I'm looking for the brightest lights for every exterior bulb on my dually. The sites tend to confuse my gentle mind and they present too many different bulbs. They are too expensive to use trial and error method of finding the best.
I am assuming that somewhere somebody has already done this and can tell me which are the best lights and where to buy them.
Pilot used to have a full line of LEDs with automotive bases. However, as long as they run off 12v your pretty much good to run. If your buying just LEDs, you will need to add a resistor and some maths to get them right. I don't believe there is a big difference between what anyone is selling. Some will be a little higher amperage, which may produce slightly more lumens or CP, but you probably couldn't notice the difference as long as they weren't side by side.
I've bought quite a few LEDs from superbrightleds.com. I've only bought ones for dash illumination and courtesy lights though so I can't comment on their brake, turn sigs, etc.
i have messed with the lighting on my SD quite a bit and it is not the best choice to change "every exterior" bulb to LED.
most of the trucks fixtures are not designed for LED bulbs and the results wont be that good
havent seen a good replacement back up light LED, cargo light LED, replacement fog light LED, headlight LED, or front turn signal/marker LED.
they can work in rear turns/stops ok, mirrors ok, and possibly some of the clearance lights, and cab lights
i did change some of the exterior lights on my freightliner car hauler to LED and they are great, but i bought the whole fixtures, designed for, and around the LEDs output. still use regular headlihgts, but did get LED driving lights that rule (Xmitters)
you can buy hi performance conventional style bulbs for your SD and make some improvements.
silver star clear front turn/markers look good because they arent amber untill turned on. you can get better head light and fog light bulbs, and there are probably brighter version of some of the other exterior bulbs you have also
now if others have had better luck with complete LED changeovers on the SD lets hear about it!!!
To expand on what Kengarchow said, LEDs provide directional light in a narrow angle. Where as incandescent bulbs radiate light in all directions and fills the reflectors. The effect is a light pattern that fills the whole lamp vs LEDs that shine small spots on the lens.
While on the subject of LED's, I have been looking for LED's for my rear stop/turn/tail lights. My '06 F-350 has bulb # 4157 for this but I can't find them in LED, only the 3157's. They appear to be very similar. Is there a difference between these bulbs that make them not interchangable?
