Ok... another kind of stupid question... What transfer case would a '70 F-250 w/ a 4 speed have? (I assume the tranny would be an NP 435) It has a 390 in it. I'm going to look at the truck tomorrow... actually its today now lol and wanted to know some more about it.
Would the stock transfer case be any good for decent 4 wheeling? (Like trails, some rock, mudding, moderate hill climbs, plus daily driving, nothing serious)
Truck needs a tranny, not sure whats wrong, guy just said it needs work.... I assume it would be fairly simple to rebuild an NP 435... and cheap.

The 4 speed is a New Process 435.
There were no 390 engines factory installed in any 4WD trucks.
1968/76: The only V8 available was the 360 2V.
1970 F250 4WD: The standard engine was the 240 I-6; the 300 I-6 & 360 2V were optional.
I had a 71 f250 4x4 I parted out that had a dana 24. haven't heard anything bad but never heard anything at all about these t-cases. I hope I'm not mixing up the numbers but the single speed t-case is a dana 21.
I just looked at the truck... its not too bad, runs absolutely perfect... sounds nice too. Trans is F$^#ED... Transfer case is divorced... does that mean it was a factory high boy? (I know it did for the next gen trucks...) No power steering I'd have to put PS on it if I put big tires on it... Needs a windshield too (cracked) Has Warn bumpers, including winch front (but no winch )
I've GOT an NP 435 out of a dodge sitting in my garage... would that bolt up? It was like a 70's or 80's dodge...
I would not worry about breaking Your transfer case, unless You abuse it intentionally trying to break it. A u-joint or drive shaft should break before the T-case does. Dan
It should be a Dana 24,assuming that someone hasnt switched it out for a later model Np205 divorce mounted case, either are plenty strong for most drivers, 2 spd with an approximately 1.96-1 low range ratio.........
