Where's the sound??
Where's the sound??
I wanted to get more exhaust sound out of my 90 F250.. so I got rid of the stock big fat muffler/single in dual out setup. And I just used a single 2.5" with a Flowtech Raptor turbo muffler.. it added a small amount of sound but still was stock-like quiet.. So I swapped the Raptor for a Magnaflow.. and now it seems like its even more quiet.. what gives?? everyone keeps telling me flowmaster.. But I don't want to spend $100 on a muffler and not get any sound out of it. the only thing I can think of is going with a straight pipe or glasspack.. and getting rid of the big fat cat is out of the question, since we have the smog ****'s here..or i guess I can live with it being quiet.. it seems like my truck has a little more get up and go, since i trashed the stock exhaust..as for gas mileage.. i haven't done the math yet.
I wanted to have the exhaust exit infront of the right rear tire, but when I was measuring and loose-fitting pipes, the spring hanger was always in the way..I was thinking about moving the muffler closer to the cat, and using a 45 degree elbow instead of the 90 degree..

The Magnaflow will give it more sound but you might have been better off with a 3" setup. As for the side exit, move it up and try a 45 deg. bend, that may just work. Get rid of the huge cat for a better flowing one and it will help alot with the sound as well.
I will add, if a Magnaflow isn't louder then a Raptor... Flomaster will be just as much of a waste.

I've been looking under my truck and I think I've found a way to made the side exit work. would the muffler be safe under the right frame rail? it wouldn't hang down any further than the exhaust hangs now.. I just need to turn the muffler on it side instead of having it going up/down... then the 90 degree bend and pipe should sit under the spring hanger about 1 to 2 inches.. would heat be a problem? I could probably make a heat shield out of some sheet metal.. there are also two convenient bolt holes in the frame that I can bolt an exhaust hanger bracket onto..
I was also thinking about chopping off the pipe after the muffler and just putting a downturn on the end of the muffler.. but with that setup, I am worried about exhaust getting up into the camper shell or the cab.. I sometimes take the dogs up north and they ride in the back in carriers..
I think the tailpipe is what is killing my sound.. probably has alot of back-pressure.. with the side exit, it would probably flow a heck of alot better.. 1 bend as opposed to 4 bends.
351m: thanks for your reply, and you're right.. should've gone 3".. and I had a feeling the flowmaster wouldn't make a difference.. I like the magnaflow better anyway. it's almost like having a straight pipe. i've heard that the packing wears out/gets blown out on them though.. is this true?

If it were me, I'd replace your OEM cat with a single high-flow cat from Bear River Converters. That will provide some performance gains and significantly shorten the distance from the Y-pipe to the muffler. This will provide you more than enough space to do the exhaust tips in front of your rear tire. You already have a great Magnaflow muffler so the only new part you need is the high-flow cat. There is an adapter on eBay that allows you to keep the stock Y-pipe exit but mount the standard round cat. It's about $35.00.

Furian: thanks.. i'll have to look into that..I'm sure the cat on my truck isn't long for this world anyway.. the truck has over 180K on it, and as far as I can tell it still has the orig. cat on it...still passes emissions with flying colors though..
I was looking on the Bear River site and they had a direct fit cat for $289.. which is pretty reasonable..

i think i got what I wanted out of my exhaust now....straightpipe.. sounds beefy now..that fat cat is enough to keep it reasonably quiet..however.. I still like the idea of going with the bear river cat..I will return the magnaflow muffler(since it had only been run for 4 days and I did not weld or modify it.. i used clamps.).. and start saving up for a better 3" system..I think a 3" system with the bear river cat, and another magnaflow or flowmaster muffler I will still have the sound I want with better flow.. not to mention a better professional-like looking exhaust instead of the redneck setup i have now..
I can weld and cut.. but I don't have a pipe bender..and I will not take my truck to a shop in the Phoenix area where I live.. lots of crooked/shady shops here...wonder if they will just bend the pipes to my specification?

Bear River----Is there any sound clips of your mufflers or muffler/cat combos out there anywhere?
If you have a V10 engine, then you have a Super Duty truck (1999-present) and should not need this adapter. This specific adapter was made for the older F-Series trucks (1992-1996) that had a rather large single cat after the Y-pipe.
Yes I know that but doesn't the SD V10 have a 3-bolt flange on the pipe in front of the cat? Same rule would apply. If you had an adapter for the universal cat you wouldn't have to chop the flange off of the stock converter.
