I have a 2000 f350 4x4 SD. The problem is when I hit a bump or go over a railroad track I get a loud rumbling noise with vibration. It sounds and fells like you are running over the "wake up groves" on the side of the highway. The weird thing is I can turn the 4x4 button on on the dash and it will stop . Turn the 4x4 of and it will not do it again until I hit another bump. With that being said I think it may be in the 4x4 somewhere. I put it in the shop and they cant find anything wrong. This is driving me crazy, plus I'm not sure if it is dangerous to drive. Thanks very much for any help you can give me.
It sounds like one or both of the front bearings are shot and it's grinding on your axle shaft(s) when in 2wd. In 4wd you won't hear anything beings the shafts are spinning.
yes it does have some play. how much is normal or ok. Can you tell me what would be involved in doing this repair. Parts needed, special tools, ect? any idea of what a repair like this might cost. Thanks for everyone's help.
I replaced the right side hub assy. $210.00 per side at ORileys. I took the old one off and found that the bearings were dry and i think one of the needles was missing from it. Any way the problem is I still have a LOT of slop in the u joint when i shake it with my hand. I thought the new hub assy. with the new bearings would have fixed this but it didn't.Any thoughts as to how to tighten up the u joint? Thanks
Just change the u-joint before it breaks on the highway, they do not cost much. on one of my older trucks I had one break and drop the drive shaft on the interstate.
I didn't explain that correctly. The u joint is tight, the whole axle is moving when i put my hand on the u joint and shake it. Is there something in the axle housing that holds the axle tight. Also is there something besides the needle bearings in the hub assembly that holds the axle tight. I just cant figure out what is causing the axle to be so loose. Thanks for everyone's help.
The axle doesn't get really tight.. If the needle bearing is good and the locking hub is good you should be good to go.. The hub supports the end of the axle..along with the needle bearing. Don't forget when you are not in 4wd the axle does nothing it just sits there. When in 4wd it works fine even when its a little loose. The seal on the end of the axle behind the bearing helps alot also. Did you change the seal?
I only replaced the hub assembly could you explain in detail where the seal is and what is involved in replacing it. I am not a mechanic, I'm just trying to learn to do this stiff myself and save a little money . Thanks for your help.
